The South Carolina National Guard is proud to support Operation Palmetto Employment (OPE), Governor Haley’s new initiative focused on finding meaningful civilian careers for South Carolina’s military community. For the past several months we’ve met with representatives from the Governor’s office, the SC Department of Employment and Workforce and many others who have worked diligently to bring this important program to fruition.
Our mission is two-fold: to continually reduce the unemployment rate among all branches of South Carolina’s military community, and to educate South Carolina employers on the value of military hires. It’s a win-win for all parties involved, with benefits that extend far beyond the workplace to all citizens of our great state.
OPE is a natural extension of the work we’ve been doing for the past two years, taking care of our service and family members by making sure they successfully transition into the civilian workforce. Since 2011, our Employment Services Division has made more than 1,800 job placements, reducing the Guard’s unemployment rate from more than 16 to less than 4 percent.
One-on-one case management has been the key to our success, and there is still much work to be done. We help service members become work-ready, and provide employers with direct referrals of quality, pre-screened applicants. Job fairs, military-to-civilian skills translation, and referrals to various education and training resources are also part of the plan.
Now through OPE, our statewide team of employment advisors will work closely with other veteran service representatives in their region to connect military jobseekers with employers looking to hire. This team approach will provide additional opportunities to more effectively serve those who have served our state and our country, and will strengthen our ability to fulfill OPE’s vision: to make South Carolina the most military-friendly state in the nation.
Thank you for your interest and support, and we look forward to connecting with you soon.
